Unidentified Sound Object Taps RCF for Superior Atmos Immersion

Milan, Italy—Opened in December 2024, the new post-production studio U.S.O. (Unidentified Sound Object) is now the operational hub for Matteo Milani, a well-established audio post-production veteran. With a successful career and numerous awards, Milani has contributed to national and international projects, ranging from commercials, documentaries, and SFX libraries to mixes for cinema, short films, and sound installations.

The new studio marks yet another milestone in a professional journey devoted to sound exploration. Equipped with a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 system, its design is to meet the needs of an increasingly immersive market, the USO facility stands out as a state-of-the-art sound laboratory.

“Choosing Dolby Atmos was a natural step in my career,” explains Milani. “The post-production market is demanding more immersive formats—not only for cinema and TV but also for unique sound experiences, such as artistic installations and virtual reality. I felt the need to create a sound lab that would serve as a benchmark—a place where I could focus while having the tools I need to achieve what’s closest to my idea of perfection.”

After evaluating his 2.1 setup, Milani selected the RCF AYRA PRO5 monitors and the AYRA PRO10 SUB subwoofer. “I was impressed by the crystal-clear definition of the high frequencies and the incredibly linear phase response, attributed to RCF’s FiRPHASE technology, which I now feel is essential in immersive applications. The power and compact size convinced me they were perfect for my new studio.”

The AYRA PRO10 SUB subwoofer adds the necessary depth and power for monitoring low frequencies in a Dolby Atmos system. “I designed and built my Atmos room around RCF’s monitors. For control and routing, I opted for a modular solution. I use RME TotalMix FX for monitor management and a combination of RME Digiface cards with Ferrofish Pulse16 converters for the audio signal. Control is achieved via MIDI through a custom iPad deck made with Soundflow, making the system extremely flexible,” Milani elaborates.

An innovative cabling approach, using Cat.6a cables for Dante, USB, HDMI, and analog audio signals, has reduced the reliance on traditional cables, ensuring organization, efficiency, and reduced interference. After the system was installed, Milani expressed his enthusiasm: “The sound clarity and level of immersion exceeded my expectations. Every sonic element finds its place with precision, creating a unique three-dimensional experience.”

The RCF AYRA PRO system has proven versatile and reliable across a range of USO Production’s projects—from cinema mixes to sound designs for artistic installations—confirming the studio’s ability to deliver a consistent, high-quality audio experience.
